A 60-year-old mother in California has been charged with murder, thirty years after leaving her newborn son dead in a grocery bag along a road. The arrest of Pamela Ferreyra was announced by the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office, with Ferreyra currently held in a California jail on a $1 million bond.
The tragic incident occurred in 1994 when a man collecting aluminum cans discovered the newborn, later known as Baby Garin, wrapped in a grocery bag along Garin Road. The baby was found to have been born alive but died shortly after. Despite an autopsy being unable to determine the exact cause of death, investigators believe the child passed away between November 1, 1994, and December 3, 1994.
The case remained unsolved for decades until it was reopened in 2023, with advancements in DNA technology allowing investigators to explore genetic material from the case for potential leads. This ultimately led to a breakthrough, with a company providing a lead on the baby’s family, resulting in Ferreyra’s arrest being ordered last week.
Monterey County Assistant District Attorney Matt L’Heureux revealed that they believe Ferreyra may have other children and could not speculate on her mindset over the last three decades. L’Heureux shared, “We run into a variety of different reactions. Some seem to think they have gotten away with it and are very surprised, while others have been waiting for that knock on the door for decades. I couldn’t tell you under which situation this falls, but we’re grateful that this day has come.”
