A former Park Service ranger has accused U.S. Senate hopeful Tim Sheehy of Montana of lying about a bullet wound, which the candidate claimed he sustained while fighting in Afghanistan. The ranger, Kim Peach, alleged that Sheehy actually shot himself during a family trip in Montana. Sheehy and his supporters dismissed the accusation as a smear campaign orchestrated by Democrats ahead of the closely watched Senate race.
With less than three weeks until the election, these claims have added pressure on Sheehy as he challenges three-term Democratic incumbent Senator Jon Tester. Sheehy, a former U.S. Navy SEAL, has made his military background a focal point of his campaign, highlighting his combat experiences and injuries sustained in the line of duty, including being awarded a Purple Heart and Bronze Star.
The controversy surrounding the alleged bullet wound arose earlier this year when a Glacier National Park ranger, identified as Peach, claimed that Sheehy accidentally shot himself in 2015 during a family outing. Sheehy acknowledged lying to the park ranger about the incident but maintained that his combat injuries were genuine, including the arm wound from 2012.
Despite facing scrutiny over the conflicting stories, Sheehy remains a strong contender in the Senate race, with absentee voting already underway in Montana. Peach, who admitted to being a Democrat, insisted on revealing the truth about Sheehy’s injury, stating that he couldn’t allow the candidate to deceive the public.
Tester’s campaign has utilised the controversy in recent adverts, criticising Sheehy for lying about the gunshot wound. However, the National Republican Senatorial Committee denounced the accusations against Sheehy as a desperate attempt by Democrats to undermine his candidacy in the crucial election.
