An NHS doctor has issued a warning about certain tinned foods that people should avoid consuming. Dr Karan Rajan, a surgeon and author, with a significant following on social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok, often shares health advice and debunks myths. In a recent post, he emphasized the importance of inspecting canned foods before consumption.
Dr Rajan highlighted the need to check for dents on the side seam of the can, which are usually covered by the label. He advised peeling off the label to carefully examine any dents. The doctor explained that dents not involving the side seam or creating sharp edges may still be safe to eat. However, he cautioned that dents causing a hole or compromising the can’s integrity should lead to disposal of the food inside.
According to Dr Rajan, dents affecting the top seam of the can make the entire product unsafe. He reassured that small dents not encroaching the seam or ones that are shallow are generally safe. The doctor advised individuals to discard cans that appear crushed or on the brink of exploding. While not every dented can needs to be thrown away, he recommended erring on the side of caution by disposing of questionable items.
It is crucial to pay attention to the condition of canned foods to ensure food safety and avoid health risks. Dr Karan Rajan’s advice serves as a reminder to consumers to be vigilant when it comes to consuming tinned products to safeguard their well-being.
