A police officer in Bedfordshire bravely clung to a car’s door for over 700 metres as a suspect tried to escape at high speed. Reece Wheeler, 24, was driving a vehicle believed to be involved in drug dealing when he was stopped by officers in Houghton Regis. Officer “PC R” attempted to detain Wheeler, but the suspect accelerated, forcing the officer to hold on to the car.
The officer managed to remove the keys and engage the steering lock while the car was travelling at speeds of up to 60mph. This action caused the vehicle to swerve and crash before Wheeler was eventually arrested. Wheeler, who has no fixed address, was sentenced to four years in prison after being found guilty of GBH without intent, handling stolen goods, and dangerous driving. Additionally, he received a five-year driving ban.
