A Polish zoo is celebrating the birth of four Sumatran tiger cubs, a critically endangered species, marking a significant milestone in conservation efforts for these majestic animals. The Wrocław Zoo, located in the southwestern Polish city of Wroclaw, made the announcement on Friday after keeping the birth a closely-guarded secret for weeks out of concern for the cubs’ survival.
Officials revealed that the four tiger cubs were born on July 22, with each cub now weighing over 8 kilograms, which is double the size of a domestic cat. Weronika Łysek, a spokesperson for the zoo, shared that the decision to delay the announcement was to ensure the cubs had time to grow, gain strength and receive vaccinations before making their debut to the public.
Sergiusz Kmiecik, the acting president of the zoo, expressed immense joy at the healthy development of all four tiger cubs. He described the cubs as active, eager to eat and play with each other and their parents. The zoo has a long history of breeding Sumatran tigers, with the current cubs being the offspring of mother Nuri and father Tengah, who had previously produced a female cub named Surya residing in a zoo in Cottbus, Germany.
Paweł Sroka, the head of the zoo’s department of predatory mammals, highlighted the rare occurrence of Tengah remaining with the cubs from the beginning, showing a calm and nurturing attitude towards them. The birth of three male cubs in the litter is also significant for the zoo, as it helps balance the population of male and female tigers in European zoos.
The future plans for the four Sumatran tiger cubs are yet to be determined as they continue to grow. The zoo is considering involving its visitors and fans in naming the cubs. Sumatran tigers face immense threats in the wild, including poaching and habitat loss, with only around 400 individuals remaining in their natural habitat. The Wrocław Zoo, along with its foundation, is actively engaged in conservation efforts to protect and support the survival of this critically endangered species.
