A young man, Caleb Ferguson, who murdered Cameron Rae in a Perth city centre flat, was recently found guilty of driving while under the influence of cocaine and carrying a blade. Ferguson, now facing life imprisonment for the murder, was driving a BMW on the motorway with a significantly high level of cocaine in his system, 20 times over the legal limit. The teenager admitted to having a knife in Crammond Place, Perth, and to the drug-driving offence in court.
During the sentencing, Sheriff Jennifer Bain KC emphasized the seriousness of Ferguson’s actions and imposed a 163-day jail term for the knife offence, along with a £750 fine for the drug-driving charge. Additionally, the fine was converted into an extra 28 days of prison time, and he received an 18-month driving ban due to the extremely high level of drugs found in his system while behind the wheel.
Ferguson, aged 20, pleaded guilty to these offences earlier in the year, and the sentencing was postponed until after the murder trial, where he was found guilty of killing Cameron Rae. Although prosecutors dropped charges related to cocaine and cannabis possession, Ferguson is set to return to the high court for sentencing on the murder charge the following month. Judge Lord Scott warned him to expect a lengthy prison term before being eligible for parole.
During the trial, Ferguson admitted to causing Mr. Rae’s death but denied the charge of murder. He stabbed his victim three times before fleeing the scene and notifying the authorities, leaving Mr. Rae with fatal injuries. The victim’s mother, Kerry Burgess, expressed that nothing would make up for the loss of her son, stating, “My boy is never coming home, ever.” Ferguson’s reckless actions have clearly had a devastating impact on multiple lives.
