A tragic incident unfolded at Elgin bus station in February 2024 where a 16-year-old boy, who cannot be named due to legal reasons, carried out a fatal attack on bus driver Keith Rollinson. The High Court in Edinburgh heard that the teenager had been consuming alcohol with friends in Elgin town centre before attempting to board Mr Rollinson’s coach to go home. However, Mr Rollinson, who worked for Stagecoach, refused him entry due to his level of intoxication.
The situation escalated when the teenager attacked Mr Rollinson, headbutting him and repeatedly punching him until he collapsed and later passed away. CCTV footage of the assault was shown in court, prompting some of Mr Rollinson’s family members to leave the courtroom. The police noted the teenager’s indifference and arrogance during their interview with him after the attack, where he mentioned praying for the deceased’s well-being.
The court revealed that the accused had a history of offending and had previously assaulted another bus driver. Despite claiming self-defence, the teenager’s actions led to Mr Rollinson’s tragic death. A post mortem examination revealed that the bus driver’s death was attributed to heart disease, diabetes, and coronary issues, exacerbated by the physical altercation.
The court proceedings also highlighted how the teenager’s behaviour continued even after the attack, as he discussed it with a taxi driver and a friend. The accused’s defence advocate reserved their mitigation for a future sentencing hearing, and Lady Hood deferred sentence to obtain a report on the teenager’s background. The youth will face sentencing at the High Court in Inverness in November 2024.
