Storm Ashley is expected to hit the UK this weekend, with an amber weather warning issued ahead of 80mph winds. The storm, named by Met Eireann, marks the first named storm of the season.
According to the Met Office, a yellow weather warning has already been issued for Scotland, covering the period from 3 am on Sunday until noon on Monday. The warning extends to all of Scotland and predicts winds of up to 80mph in western regions, as well as areas of north-west England, Carlisle, Bangor in Wales, and Northern Ireland.
There is a “small chance” of danger to life from flying debris and large waves on the coast, along with possible closures of roads and bridges. Train and flight cancellations are also a possibility. The Met Office further warns of a “slight chance” of damage to buildings, such as tiles blown from roofs, and potential power cuts affecting mobile phone coverage.
The agency stated, “A windy period is expected across the whole of the UK on Sunday and into Monday, but across parts of Scotland, Northern Ireland, Northwest England, and North West Wales there is an increased chance of some disruption.” Strong south to south-easterly winds are expected to develop through Sunday morning, with gusts of 50-60mph inland, especially in Northern Ireland and western Scotland, and possibly reaching 60-70mph along exposed coasts and hills.
As winds turn south-westerly during Sunday afternoon and evening, especially strong winds are anticipated in western Scotland. Gusts could potentially reach 70-80mph in exposed areas, and more generally 55-65mph in other parts of the warning area. The combination of strong winds and high spring tides may lead to disruption.
