Tata Steel Celebrates Milestone with Contract Signing to Deliver Electric Arc Furnace
In a significant development for the steel industry, Tata Steel has recently signed a contract with a leading metals technology manufacturer, Tenova, to deliver a cutting-edge electric arc furnace and advanced steelmaking equipment for its largest UK site in Port Talbot, South Wales.
This move is part of Tata Steel’s commitment to producing greener steel, with the electric arc furnace (EAF) set to replace traditional blast furnaces that have been decommissioned, resulting in the loss of thousands of jobs. The new EAF is expected to significantly reduce the site’s carbon emissions by 90%, which is equivalent to a reduction of five million tonnes of CO2 per year.
The commissioning of the electric arc furnace is scheduled for the end of 2027 and will have an annual capacity of three million tonnes of steel, similar to the output of the site’s previous blast furnaces. The EAF will operate by melting scrap steel sourced locally in the UK.
T V Narendran, the chief executive of Tata Steel, expressed his enthusiasm about the partnership with Tenova, stating, “This landmark agreement will enable us to transform our steelmaking site that will not only support the UK’s decarbonisation journey but also provide economic development opportunities for South Wales.”
Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds also lauded the collaboration between Tata Steel and Tenova, highlighting the importance of technological advancements in decarbonising the steel industry. The upcoming steel strategy aims to provide certainty for the sector’s long-term growth and viability, supported by up to £2.5 billion in funding for steel-related initiatives.
Paolo Argenta, the executive vice president for Tenova’s Upstream Business Unit, expressed confidence in the partnership with Tata Steel UK, emphasising their collaborative approach towards successful project implementation.
The adoption of innovative technologies like the electric arc furnace marks a significant step towards sustainable steelmaking, creating skilled job opportunities and economic stability for steelworkers in South Wales. This transition not only aligns with Tata Steel’s sustainability goals but also contributes to the UK’s carbon reduction efforts and supports customers in achieving their own environmental targets.
