Andrew Garfield has expressed his gratitude towards his co-star Jessica Chastain and Searchlight Pictures producer David Greenbaum for their compassionate act of halting production on the film “The Eyes of Tammy Faye” to allow him to be with his dying mother.
In the 2021 film, Garfield and Chastain portrayed televangelists Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker, and it was during the filming in 2019 that Garfield’s mother, Lynn Garfield, was battling pancreatic cancer. Garfield shared with People magazine how Chastain and Greenbaum rescheduled the filming in North Carolina for a few days so that he could be by his mother’s side in England during her final days.
Vincent D’Onofrio, another co-star, also encouraged Garfield to leave the set and be with his mother, drawing from his own experience of not being able to be present during a loss. Garfield recounted how he and Chastain would attend church services together and visit the now-closed Christian theme park Heritage USA, creating a supportive and understanding environment during a challenging time.
Reflecting on his time spent with Chastain, Garfield mentioned that their deep conversations and mutual support were particularly meaningful as he navigated his mother’s illness and passing. The actor expressed his gratitude for the connection they forged during that period.
Apart from his experiences during “The Eyes of Tammy Faye”, Garfield also defended his collaboration with Mel Gibson in the 2016 war film “Hacksaw Ridge”. Despite Gibson’s controversial past, Garfield praised the filmmaker for his personal growth and expressed admiration for his storytelling abilities, highlighting his compassionate nature.
Garfield, who is Jewish, disclosed that he engaged in profound discussions with Gibson before agreeing to work on the film, acknowledging the impactful lessons he gained from the collaboration. With upcoming projects like sequels to “The Passion of the Christ” and “Lethal Weapon”, Gibson has faced his share of public scrutiny but continues to be recognised for his filmmaking talents.
