A college student from Kentucky is facing a year in jail after being caught on video using the n-word around 200 times and assaulting a Black woman.
Sophia Rosing, a former student at the University of Kentucky, gained notoriety in 2022 when a video of her drunken outburst was widely shared on social media. In the video, Rosing was seen using the racial slur towards a fellow student and physically attacking her.
Rosing had previously pleaded guilty to four counts of fourth-degree assault and other charges, expressing remorse during her plea hearing towards the victim, Kylah Spring, and the Black community. This week, a judge in Kentucky handed down a sentence of 12 months in jail along with a requirement for Rosing to complete 100 hours of community service.
Her attorney, Fred Peters, shared that the plea was reached after both sides engaged in discussions and apologies were made. Despite this, Spring expressed doubts about Rosing’s sincerity in her remorse.
Following the incident, Rosing was banned from the University of Kentucky campus. The video captured Rosing repeatedly using the n-word while assaulting Spring. Spring recounted being struck multiple times and kicked in the stomach by Rosing during the altercation.
The video has caused outrage due to the excessive use of the racial slur. Rosing’s actions have led to a significant backlash and consequences for her behaviour.
