Ryanair charges man £75 for ‘stiff wheel on suitcase’

Ryanair Passenger Upset Over £75 Charge for “Stiff Wheel” on Suitcase

A holidaymaker has voiced his frustration at Ryanair staff who charged him £75 for his suitcase supposedly having a “stiff wheel,” which he claims he was never charged for before. Austin Price, from Plymouth, was flying from Bristol Airport to Krakow, Poland, on October 4 when he faced the unexpected charge. The 28-year-old was instructed to place his suitcase in the ‘if it fits, it flies’ measuring stand, where he was told that although the luggage fit in terms of height and width, the wheels made it stick out at the front, causing it to exceed the permitted dimensions.

Despite Austin’s objections and posting images online showing the discrepancy, Ryanair insisted that his 10kg cabin bag did not meet their requirements and hence, he had to pay the gate baggage fee of £75. Austin, who had paid for priority boarding to take the bag on board, expressed his disappointment at the additional charge, which he believed would only be around £28, based on Ryanair’s website information. He criticised the staff for being overly strict, describing them as “jobsworths” who were enforcing the rules poorly.

Furthermore, Austin highlighted how other passengers were also being charged, including one individual with a small pram, indicating a lack of consistency in applying the rules. He raised concerns about the impact these unexpected fees could have on travellers, especially those on a budget. Despite reaching out to Ryanair to seek a refund, Austin claimed the response he received did not address his concerns and only reiterated the amount he was required to pay.

This incident has sparked a debate about airline baggage policies and the subjectivity in enforcing them. While airlines have clear guidelines for luggage dimensions, the interpretation of these rules by staff members may lead to inconsistencies and frustrations among passengers. The incident serves as a reminder for travellers to double-check airline policies and be prepared for unexpected charges, even for seemingly minor infractions.
