A body has been discovered in the River Thames during the search for a man who went missing nine days ago after a rowing boat overturned in the waterway. The incident occurred near Sunbury-on-Thames on the morning of Friday, 11th October, when a small boat carrying six individuals capsized near Sunbury Lock, a popular spot for rowing, sailing, and kayaking.
While five of the occupants were successfully rescued from the river, three of them were subsequently taken to the hospital for further evaluation, according to officials on the scene. However, a man in his sixties remained unaccounted for, leading Surrey Police to express concerns that he may still be in the water following an extensive search effort.
In a recent update, authorities reported that specialist search teams had recovered a body believed to be that of the missing man near Sunbury Weir on Sunday. Formal identification is pending, but the man’s family has been notified and is receiving support from a dedicated officer. The police have stated that there are no suspicions of foul play in connection with the man’s death.
Chief Inspector Andy Jenkins of North Surrey remarked, “Throughout this tragic incident we have been in close contact with the man’s family to offer them support and information during this incredibly difficult time.” He added, “Our thoughts remain with them, and we ask that their privacy is respected while they come to terms with their loss.” An investigation is now underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the man’s demise.
Upon receiving reports of individuals in distress in the water near Wheatleys Eyot, emergency services including police, paramedics, and fire and rescue teams rushed to Sunbury Lock to begin search and rescue operations. HM Coastguard and a local RNLI service were also enlisted to aid in the effort.
