Japan’s beloved former Empress Michiko marks her 90th birthday as she recovers from a broken leg

Former Empress of Japan, Michiko, celebrated her 90th birthday amidst recovering from a broken leg. The Japanese icon received warm greetings from her relatives and palace officials as she continues on the path to recovery. Michiko made history by being the first commoner to ascend to the role of empress in modern Japanese history. She and then-Crown Prince Akihito tied the knot in 1959 after a romance that began on the tennis court.

After Emperor Akihito’s abdication in 2019 and the ascension of their son, Emperor Naruhito, Michiko and Akihito retreated from public life to enjoy peaceful moments together. They are often seen taking leisurely strolls in the palace gardens or engaging in private activities such as book reading and music sessions. Akihito remains deeply concerned about Michiko’s well-being, especially following her recent fall at their residence which led to a surgery for a femoral fracture.

Despite her injury, Michiko is steadily regaining her strength through daily rehabilitation sessions. She is expected to participate in her birthday celebrations while seated in a wheelchair. Michiko’s compassionate nature was evident as she expressed concern for those affected by natural disasters in Japan, showing solidarity with victims and their families.

Since retiring, Michiko has immersed herself in literature, sharing her love for children’s books, English poetry, and music with those around her. She and Akihito have embraced a daily routine of reading together, with their current literary journey focusing on war and the history of Okinawa, an island that holds significant historical importance in Japan. The couple’s unconventional approach to monarchy, including raising their own children and engaging more openly with the public, has endeared them to the Japanese people.

Their dedication to acknowledging war victims and fostering positive change within and outside Japan has left a lasting impact. The bond shared between Akihito and Michiko reflects a deep sense of unity and compassion, resonating with the hearts of many in Japan. As Michiko continues to recover and celebrate her milestone birthday, her legacy of grace and empathy remains an inspiration to all.
