Australia is set to tighten regulations surrounding the presence of “forever chemicals” in drinking water, with new guidelines proposing significant reductions in allowable levels. The National Health and Medical Research Council recently released draft guidelines recommending lower limits for four PFAS compounds, reflecting increasing concerns about their potential health impacts.
PFAS, a group of synthetic chemicals found in everyday products such as nonstick cookware, firefighting foams, and stain-resistant fabrics, are known for their persistence in the environment, earning them the label of “forever chemicals.” These substances can linger in the environment for decades and accumulate in human and animal tissue, posing risks of exposure through contaminated water, food, and air. The presence of PFAS in drinking water raises particular concerns due to potential long-term health effects.
Dr. Ian Musgrave, a senior lecturer at the University of Adelaide, highlighted that PFAS are slow to break down and can accumulate in the body, taking years to be eliminated. The proposed stricter limits in the draft guidelines are based on evidence linking PFAS exposure to various health issues. For example, the limit for PFOA, commonly used in products like Teflon, would decrease from 560 nanograms per litre (ngl) to 200 ngl due to its carcinogenic properties as classified by the International Agency for Research on Cancer.
Similarly, the limit for PFOS, once a main ingredient in Scotchgard fabric protectors, would be reduced from 70 ngl to 4 ngl based on new research indicating potential effects on bone marrow. The guidelines also establish new limits for PFHxS and PFBS, considering their impact on thyroid function. While the proposed guidelines align with international standards, such as those in the US, Australia’s approach balances scientific evidence with policy considerations.
According to experts like Professor Oliver Jones of RMIT University, the proposed limits are rooted in available scientific knowledge and tailored to individual PFAS compounds to ensure drinking water safety. Water quality management in Australia involves collaboration between federal and state authorities, with guidelines continuously reviewed to reflect emerging research on contaminants like PFAS. Despite the stricter limits, the general public is advised not to panic about PFAS in their drinking water, as contamination levels in public water supplies in Australia are relatively low.
Dr. Daniel Deere, a water and health consultant, reassured that Australians need not seek alternative water sources unless notified of specific contamination issues. Professor Stuart Khan from the University of Sydney emphasized that the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines remain robust and science-based, providing confidence in the safety of drinking water. The ongoing review of PFAS limits in drinking water aims to address evolving scientific insights and community feedback to ensure public health protection.
The draft guidelines will undergo a public consultation period until November 22, 2024, allowing stakeholders and the public to contribute feedback before final limits are implemented.
