US Secretary of State Antony Blinken is embarking on his 11th trip to the Middle East since the eruption of the Gaza conflict last year, amidst uncertain prospects for a truce. The State Department announced that Blinken will be leaving on Monday for a week-long visit to Israel and several Arab nations. This visit comes at a time when Israel is escalating attacks against Hezbollah in Lebanon and is considering retaliation against Iran for recent ballistic missile strikes.
President Joe Biden had indicated last week that Blinken would be sent to the region following Israel’s targeting of Hamas military leader Yahya Sinwar. This development has raised hopes for potential discussions on a ceasefire proposal that has not made progress for months. State Department spokesman Matthew Miller stated that Blinken will focus on ending the conflict in Gaza, securing the release of hostages, and easing the suffering of the Palestinian people during his trip.
Furthermore, Blinken will engage in talks regarding post-conflict planning and emphasize the necessity of a new approach that allows Palestinians to rebuild their lives autonomously. The importance of increasing humanitarian aid to Gaza will also be highlighted, following a recent letter from Blinken and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin to Israeli officials stressing the need for improved aid delivery.
In addition to addressing the Gaza crisis, Blinken aims to underscore the administration’s commitment to finding a diplomatic resolution to the escalating tensions between Israel and Hezbollah in southern Lebanon. Miller reiterated that Blinken will affirm the US’s dedication to collaborating with regional partners to de-escalate hostilities and establish lasting stability.
Since the outbreak of hostilities between Hamas and Israel in October 2023, Blinken has made 10 previous trips to the Middle East in pursuit of a resolution. While previous visits have not yielded significant progress in ending conflicts, Blinken has been successful in boosting aid deliveries to Gaza.
