A recent study on cancer has found that Brazil nuts may hold the key to halting the spread of the disease. The research, which focused on triple negative breast cancer, a particularly challenging form of the disease, was funded by Cancer Research UK. Triple negative breast cancer is typically manageable through therapy and surgery, but becomes more difficult to treat once it metastasizes.
The study revealed that selenium, an important mineral present in Brazil nuts and other foods like meat, mushrooms, and cereals, plays a crucial role in the growth and spread of cancer cells. While selenium’s antioxidant properties were initially thought to be beneficial in combating cancer, the research discovered that cancer cells heavily rely on selenium, especially when they are isolated from densely packed cell clusters.
In cases where triple negative breast cancer cells are not clustered together, such as when they are spreading to other parts of the body, they require selenium to survive. By interfering with the metabolism of selenium in these isolated cancer cells, researchers were able to induce cell death, particularly in circulating cells seeking to metastasize.
Dr. Saverio Tardito, the lead researcher from the Cancer Research UK Scotland Institute in Glasgow, highlighted the significance of the findings. He mentioned that while eliminating selenium from the diet is not a viable option due to its essential role in the body, developing treatments that disrupt selenium uptake by cancer cells could be a promising strategy to prevent the spread of triple negative breast cancer.
Triple negative breast cancer accounts for around 15% of breast cancer cases in the UK, with approximately 56,800 people diagnosed each year. This type of cancer can be linked to genetic mutations like those in the BRCA genes, which increase the risk of developing certain cancers, including breast cancer. Patients with triple negative breast cancer often have poorer outcomes compared to other forms of the disease.
Dr. Sam Godfrey, Science Engagement Lead at Cancer Research UK, emphasised the potential impact of research in preventing the spread of this aggressive cancer. The development of new treatments based on these findings could significantly improve the way triple negative breast cancer is managed.
Patients like Lisa Bancroft, who underwent preventive surgery after discovering a BRCA gene mutation, expressed hope in the advancements of medical science.
