An elderly couple from Maine found themselves lost in the woods for four days, with a heartbreaking conclusion for one of them, while the other survived thanks to their loyal pet dog.
Pamela Helmstadter, aged 72, and her husband John Helmstadter, aged 82, had initially set out for a walk with their two dogs on Sunday 13th October, just a few miles away from their residence in Alexander. However, they unintentionally veered off the trail, leading to them becoming disoriented and lost, as reported by the Portland Press Herald. With neither of them carrying cellphones, the situation became dire when John, described as less physically capable than his wife, fell down during the ordeal. Pamela decided to split up in an attempt to seek help, but she too lost her way, according to WBRC.
The distressing situation was discovered when a neighbour noticed a package left unattended on the couple’s porch for several consecutive days. Subsequently, one of their dogs returned to the home unaccompanied. After a search effort, Maine Game Warden Jake Voter located Pamela in the forest on Thursday afternoon. Pamela was discovered severely hypothermic with a low body temperature of 90.7F (32.6C) and alongside her was the couple’s black labrador, Lucy. Unfortunately, John was found deceased merely 200 yards away from his wife, as per the Press Herald.
Authorities speculate that Pamela’s survival was made possible due to Lucy the labrador keeping her warm amidst plummeting temperatures and heavy rainfall that persisted during the four days the couple were lost in the wilderness. Sargent Josh Beal from the Maine Warden Service expressed to WBRC, “When the K-9 team located her, her dog was being very protective of her and even laid down on top of her chest. It sounds like that’s what the dog would do at night as well, to help keep her warm. She did very well to survive for that long.”
Following her rescue, Pamela recounted to authorities that she had nearly given up hope until spotting rescue planes circulating above her at least five times on Thursday. By Saturday afternoon, Pamela was reported to be recuperating and “warming up” in a hospital, according to Beal.
This arduous ordeal serves as a testament to the unyielding bond between humans and their loyal animal companions, showcasing the remarkable resilience and unwavering support that pets can offer in times of crisis.
