Former Trump Ambassador Alleges Children Are Taking Their Own Lives to Halt Climate Change
Carla Sands, a former US ambassador to Denmark under the Trump administration, and now the vice-chair for the Center for Energy and Environment within the America First Policy Institute, a right-wing think tank closely associated with the former president, has made alarming claims suggesting that climate change is driving children to commit suicide.
During an event at the AFPI last year, Sands stated, “Kids are killing themselves to save the planet. Children are committing suicide because they don’t want to put out CO2. That’s how much they’ve been brainwashed and hurt by our children.” However, there is no evidence to support the assertion that children are taking their lives to control their CO2 emissions.
Sands has been vocal in her opposition to climate change legislation and politicians advocating for it, propagating conspiracy theories surrounding climate change. At the same AFPI event, she criticized the concept of 15-minute cities, suggesting they were restricting people to a specific area without permission to leave. She has also shared misinformation, such as promoting an article falsely claiming no change in global warming rates since 1970, despite evidence showing the contrary.
Furthermore, Sands is a contributor to Project 2025, which calls for significant changes within the Environmental Protection Agency, advocating for what she terms “citizen science” and a reduction in agency regulations.
While Sands’ formal involvement in the upcoming Trump administration remains uncertain, her prominent position at the AFPI underscores her influence within the former president’s circle. Recent activities by Sands include urging voters, particularly in Pennsylvania, to vote early for Trump, as well as sharing campaign trail moments with Senator JD Vance and reposting content from Elon Musk.
Carla Sands gained attention during her time as ambassador to Denmark for her unexpected tweet supporting Trump’s interest in purchasing Greenland, a move that was swiftly cancelled following her public endorsement.
