Finnish conductor and composer, Leif Segerstam, will be honoured with a tribute event following his funeral. The family of the prolific musician announced that a special memorial will take place at the Finnish National Opera in remembrance of Segerstam, who passed away in Helsinki on October 9 at the age of 80 due to complications following pneumonia.

His son, Jan Segerstam, shared with The Associated Press that the event, scheduled for November 8, will celebrate his father’s musical legacy. Leif Segerstam, known for his colourful personality in Finland’s classical music scene, composed his first piece at the young age of 6 and was also a skilled violinist.

Segerstam was renowned for creating an impressive 371 symphonies, a feat he claimed to be a world record. Despite battling illness, he continued to compose, even working on music at the hospital in his final days surrounded by music friends.

The maestro conducted various orchestras across Europe, including the Finnish National Opera, the Royal Swedish Opera, the Deutsche Oper Berlin, and the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra. He also made guest appearances with prestigious orchestras like the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and the Toronto Symphony Orchestra.

Born in Vaasa, Finland, Segerstam was raised in a musical family, trained as a violinist and pianist, and studied at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki and The Juilliard School in New York. He later became a professor of orchestra conducting at the Sibelius Academy, influencing many prominent Finnish and international conductors.

Described by his son as a vibrant and eccentric individual who lived through his music, Segerstam leaves behind a musical legacy that will be celebrated in the upcoming tribute event. Despite being married and divorced twice, he is survived by five children from his two marriages.

The Finnish National Opera will host the commemorative event to honour the life and contributions of Leif Segerstam, allowing his music to resonate with audiences and pay tribute to his remarkable career.
