Gold price reaches all-time high ahead of US presidential election
The price of gold has soared to a new record high as investors flock to the safe-haven asset amidst a closely contested US presidential race and escalating tensions in the Middle East. Gold prices surged to an unprecedented £2,097.67 ($2,732.73) per ounce, marking a nearly 40% increase over the past year and an impressive 83% surge in the last five years.
Renowned for its use in jewellery and remarkable durability due to its non-corrosive properties, gold is also favoured by investors during times of uncertainty as a hedge against economic turmoil. While it lacks the income-generating potential of stocks or real estate, gold’s status as a reliable asset has gained traction especially among those disillusioned with volatile meme stocks and cryptocurrencies.
However, the long-term appeal of gold remains a subject of debate within the investment community. Some, like Warren Buffett, view gold as nothing more than an inert metal with limited practical applications. Conversely, others regard it as a steadfast form of currency with a rich historical track record and a finite supply, making it an attractive option in an environment where traditional currencies are at risk of devaluation.
Amidst concerns over rising inflation and the substantial interest payments the US is projected to make on its mounting government debt over the coming decade, investors are turning their attention to gold. The looming US election, tightening polls with less than three weeks left, and persistent conflicts in regions like Ukraine and the Middle East further contribute to the appeal of gold as a safe investment choice.
Russ Mould, investment director at AJ Bell, notes that central banks facing the dilemma of choosing between inflation and economic growth may opt to tolerate higher inflation levels, thereby diminishing the value of conventional currencies and bolstering gold’s appeal as a store of value.
The recent surge in the price of gold underscores the deep-seated concerns and uncertainties prevalent in the global economic landscape. As investors navigate through a turbulent environment characterised by political instability and economic unpredictability, gold continues to shine as a beacon of stability and resilience in times of crisis.
