Gunmen carried out a deadly attack on workers involved in a strategic tunnel project in Indian-controlled Kashmir, resulting in the deaths of at least seven individuals and injuring five others. The incident took place at a construction workers’ camp near the town of Sonamarg, with police attributing the violence to militants opposing Indian governance, labelling it a “terror attack”.
Reports indicate that two gunmen opened fire indiscriminately on officials and workers associated with the tunnel construction, causing immediate fatalities and leaving several others critically wounded. The victims included both non-local labourers and local workers, with the tragic event unfolding shortly after workers had returned to their accommodations for the night. Authorities dispatched additional security forces to conduct search operations in pursuit of the attackers.
The tunnel project holds significant strategic importance as it aims to connect the Kashmir Valley with Ladakh, a region prone to extreme winter conditions due to heavy snowfall. Military experts highlight the tunnel’s anticipated contributions to enhancing operational capabilities in Ladakh, a region that shares sensitive borders with China and Pakistan, where military tensions have been high in recent years.
This assault marks the second targeted attack on non-local workers in the region, following the swearing-in of a local government post-elections. Prior incidents have also seen violence against civilians and officials, attributed to anti-India insurgents. Kashmir, a region claimed in its entirety by both India and Pakistan, has been a longstanding source of conflict between the nuclear-armed neighbours, with ongoing separatist sentiments and sporadic outbreaks of violence since the late 20th century.
The Indian government commonly portrays the insurgency in Kashmir as externally influenced terrorism, while Pakistan and local sympathisers view it as a struggle for freedom and self-determination. The protracted conflict has resulted in a significant loss of life and perpetual tensions in the region, emphasising the complex geopolitical dynamics at play in this contentious territory.
