Microsoft is set to revolutionize the business world by launching autonomous AI agents as part of its Copilot tool. These AI agents are virtual assistants specifically designed to assist users with designated tasks within their work environment. Scheduled for public rollout next month, these AI agents are smaller and more specialized versions of AI assistants, programmed to perform single tasks or cater to specific areas of focus autonomously.
Earlier this year, Microsoft unveiled the capability to create agents within its Copilot AI assistant. The tech giant has now confirmed that these tools will be available for public preview within its Copilot Studio tool. Additionally, Microsoft is introducing a set of 10 pre-made autonomous agents tailored to aid sales, service, finance, and supply chain teams in driving business value.
These agents can be trained using an organization’s own data and records to provide tailored assistance. Jared Spataro, Microsoft’s chief marketing officer for AI at work, described Copilot as an AI assistant that works on behalf of users. He mentioned that every organization will have a range of agents, from basic prompt-and-response to fully autonomous ones, that will execute and manage business processes seamlessly.
Microsoft highlighted that over half of the Fortune 500 companies in the US already leverage Copilot tools in their operations. Despite concerns about the impact of AI tools on the job market, Microsoft positions its agents as collaborators meant to work alongside humans rather than replace them. Spataro emphasized that the new autonomous agents aim to transition customers from traditional business applications to AI-focused processes, empowering various teams to enhance their operational efficiency.
