Pakistan is working diligently to create a spin-friendly pitch at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium in preparation for the decisive third Test against England. The upcoming match, scheduled to commence on Thursday, holds significant importance as the series is currently tied.
In the previous Test match in Multan, Pakistan successfully levelled the series by utilising industrial-sized fans to dry out the pitch. This tactic proved effective as the home team’s spinners, Noman Ali and Sajid Khan, collectively took all 20 wickets, leading Pakistan to a 152-run victory.
In efforts to replicate a similar outcome in Rawalpindi, groundstaff have been spotted using six patio-style heaters and windbreaks to recycle warm air and enhance the pitch conditions for bowlers. Pakistan’s training session on Monday revealed the presence of two oversized fans on the field, working to modify the playing surface under the supervision of Tony Hemming, the Australian head curator of the Pakistan Cricket Board.
Despite these intensive preparations, the success of the pitch transformation remains uncertain. Rawalpindi is notorious for providing flat batting tracks, and during England’s previous victory there in 2022, spinners played a minor role in the match. ICC match referee Andy Pycroft had rated the pitch as “below average” due to its lack of assistance to bowlers of all types.
