**Perth and Kinross School Closures Announced as Strike Action Begins**
In a response to the start of strike action by non-teaching staff, Perth and Kinross Council has announced school closures in the region. The strike by UNISON, part of a national pay dispute, has led to primary schools, early learning and childcare facilities, Intensive Support Provision (ISP), and Fairview School in Perth being closed on Monday, October 21. However, most secondary schools in the area will remain open, except for St John’s Academy in Perth and the Community School of Auchterarder.
The decision to close primary schools and other facilities was made due to the inability to complete risk assessments during the October holidays and uncertainty about having enough staff to ensure student safety. The situation will be monitored daily throughout the two weeks of planned industrial action by UNISON. Councillor Grant Laing, Leader of Perth and Kinross Council, expressed disappointment at the strikes and emphasised the council’s commitment to the safety of students.
UNISON branch secretary Stuart Hope stated that the strike was a result of 86% of members rejecting a pay offer, highlighting the lack of response from local government and the Scottish Government to avert the industrial action. The council mentioned the possibility of a few primary schools opening later in the week, but the situation remains dynamic, with updates being provided to parents and carers as needed.
Leisure services at community campuses are also expected to face disruptions due to the strike action. However, efforts will be made to ensure remote learning for students when schools are closed, and families eligible for Free School Meals will receive necessary support. Despite the challenges posed by the strikes, both the council and UNISON are urged to consider the impact on families and seek resolutions that mitigate the effects on students and communities.
