Scots swimming star Hannah Miley calls for SNP Government to invest in pool lessons for kids

Scots swimming champion, Hannah Miley, is advocating for increased funding in school swimming lessons to ensure more children can swim proficiently and safely in the water. The two-time Commonwealth champion highlighted the growing number of children who lack the ability to swim confidently due to budget constraints forcing councils to shut down pools or reduce leisure centre operating hours. Notably, drowning rates in Scotland are twice as high as in the rest of the UK, sparking concerns that action needs to be taken.

Miley, who has represented Team GB in three Olympic Games, proposes that providing free swimming lessons in primary schools is a fair approach to granting all children the opportunity to acquire this essential life skill. Supporting a campaign by Swimming Scotland, she is appealing to the SNP Government to allocate £6 million towards implementing a nationwide program of swimming lessons in schools. A successful trial initiative spanning nine council areas offered basic swimming instruction and crucial water safety education to all primary five pupils.

Emphasizing the significance of swimming proficiency, Miley underlined that Scotland’s picturesque landscapes, including lochs and rivers, attract people to water activities, especially during warm weather. She stressed that swimming is not only a life skill but also a means of staying fit, considering that a third of children between two and 15 are at risk of obesity. Miley asserted that the proposed £6 million investment is a minimal cost compared to the healthcare expenses associated with sedentary lifestyles, indicating that promoting swimming among youngsters can have long-term health benefits.

Euan Lowe, the chief executive of Scottish Swimming, echoed Miley’s concerns, noting the alarming number of children in Scotland who lack basic swimming abilities and the urgent need to impart these skills from a young age. He urged the government to commit to supporting a comprehensive rollout of school swimming programs to ensure equitable access to vital swimming skills, which play a crucial role in enhancing water safety for children. In response, a spokesperson for the Scottish Government affirmed the importance of providing all children with the opportunity to learn to swim, highlighting ongoing efforts to collaborate with partners in promoting swimming education.

Hannah Miley’s advocacy for investing in school swimming lessons reflects a crucial initiative aimed at addressing the disparity in swimming abilities among children in Scotland. By prioritizing water safety and promoting physical activity through swimming education, this campaign seeks to empower young individuals with a valuable life skill that can have enduring health benefits.
