Teen sex killer Jack Crawley, 20, was caught on CCTV purchasing petrol to burn the body of 56-year-old Scots father, Paul Taylor, after a brutal hammer murder in Carlisle. Last October, Crawley met with Mr. Taylor for a pre-arranged sexual encounter on the outskirts of Carlisle, where he launched a fatal hammer attack on the ex-Army man. Following the murder, Crawley attempted to dispose of Mr. Taylor’s remains by burning his body and burying it at Finglandrigg Wood near Carlisle.
Security footage captures Crawley buying a canister and filling it with petrol from a garage shortly after the murder. Mr. Taylor’s skeletal remains were eventually discovered by the police in May after he had been missing for seven months. The investigation revealed that Mr. Taylor had suffered severe blows to his skull, resulting in fatal injuries. His burnt and mutilated body was found hidden in a remote woodland area.
During the investigation, police found disturbing items such as fright masks, rope, duct tape, and cable ties in Crawley’s home. They also recovered a bottle of poppers containing Mr. Taylor’s DNA, along with a knife and aphrodisiac drug under the decking at Crawley’s property. Crawley was found guilty of Mr. Taylor’s murder in Carlisle Crown Court after admitting manslaughter but denying murder.
The jury unanimously convicted Crawley of murder, and he faces a life prison sentence for killing Mr. Taylor and attempting to murder another man with a similar weapon. Despite the verdict, Crawley appeared emotionless in court. The sentencing is scheduled to occur later this week.
In a statement released through Cumbria Police, Mr. Taylor’s family expressed the devastation and loss they felt following his tragic death. They described him as a loving husband and father who had served his country in the past. Senior Investigation Officer Ian Hussey commended the Taylor family for their dignity throughout the investigation.
The family stated, “Our lives and world were completely torn apart on October 18, 2024 with the murder of Paul… Losing Paul in these circumstances and the torment and hurt this has caused has been horrendous and indescribable. Paul will be dearly missed and he will remain in our thoughts forever.” Hussey acknowledged that while the court’s decision might offer some closure, it could never mitigate the pain felt by Mr. Taylor’s loved ones.
