Starting from pole position, Norris slipped down the field as Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz secured a one-two for Ferrari. A late passing move on Verstappen resulted in a five-second penalty for Norris, pushing him below the Dutchman and out of third place. This outcome dealt a blow to Norris’s championship aspirations.
Reflecting on the race, Norris acknowledged the competitive nature of Ferrari and expressed disappointment at not being able to outpace Verstappen. Norris lamented missed opportunities during the race, particularly highlighting a need to defend better and make smarter decisions on track. Had he finished ahead of Verstappen, Norris would have closed the gap in the championship to 51 points. However, with Verstappen now 57 points ahead, Norris faces an uphill battle with only five races remaining in the season.
With a maximum of 146 points still up for grabs, Norris will need to make significant gains in each race to have a chance at overtaking Verstappen in the standings.
