Edinburgh woman with cancer was told ‘not to worry’ after finding lump in breast

An Edinburgh woman has bravely shared her experience after being diagnosed with breast cancer at the young age of 32. Kat Denisi, from Willowbrae, discovered a lump in her breast while trying on bikinis before a trip to Florida in June 2022. Despite being reassured by her GP not to worry due to her young age, tests revealed she had stage two breast cancer, leading to a challenging journey of chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and multiple surgeries.

Recalling the moment of her diagnosis, Kat expressed her shock at the aggressive nature of the cancer and the immediate need to start treatment, including a medically induced menopause to protect her ovaries. Reflecting on the whirlwind of information and decisions following her diagnosis, she highlighted the unexpected physical and emotional toll of the treatment, including symptoms like hot flashes, brain fog, and changes in intimacy with her husband.

Facing a difficult choice regarding fertility preservation through IVF, Kat and her partner decided to prioritize her cancer treatment without delay. This decision meant coming to terms with the impact on their plans for a family and adjusting to the challenges of early menopause at the age of 32. Despite the ongoing treatment and its side effects, Kat emphasised the importance of open conversations about cancer and seeking support from organisations like Maggie’s Centre, where she found solidarity and understanding from other women in similar situations.

As Kat continues her treatment journey and looks towards the future, she encourages others facing cancer to acknowledge their emotions and seek support when needed. She emphasises the significance of raising awareness about treatment-induced menopause and its effects on individuals’ quality of life and well-being. By sharing her story, Kat hopes to inspire others to openly discuss the complex realities of living with and overcoming cancer, one day at a time.

In a society where cancer diagnoses can be daunting and overwhelming, Kat’s courage in navigating her battle with breast cancer serves as a beacon of strength and resilience. Her advocacy for honest conversations, support systems, and self-care amidst the challenges of treatment sheds light on the importance of holistic care for individuals facing similar health crises. As she continues her fight, Kat’s determination and honesty stand as a testament to the power of sharing one’s story and finding solidarity in the face of adversity.
