Empty Airbnbs are set to become safe havens for domestic abuse survivors at no cost through a new initiative. The project, established in partnership with Women’s Aid, aims to offer temporary accommodation to victims in situations where refuge spaces are unavailable. This initiative is being piloted in a undisclosed region of England.
Recent reports from The Independent highlight that over half of domestic abuse survivors end up facing homelessness after being turned away from refuges due to a severe national shortage of available spaces. Statistics from the Office for National Statistics reveal that approximately six out of ten women seeking refuge from domestic violence in England between April 2022 and March 2023 were unable to secure a place.
In collaboration with Women’s Aid, Airbnb will implement safety measures to ensure the well-being of survivors. The platform will introduce a specialised booking system that allows victims to stay anonymous during the process. Survivors will receive continuous support from domestic abuse specialists while staying at these Airbnb properties.
Farah Nazeer, the chief executive of Women’s Aid, emphasised the critical need for safe spaces for women and children fleeing abusive environments. She expressed gratitude for initiatives like this partnership with Airbnb, providing an alternative for survivors who might otherwise face homelessness or return to their abuser.
This development coincides with The Independent’s ongoing Brick by Brick campaign, conducted in association with the charity Refuge, to raise funds for constructing safe homes for women escaping domestic violence. The campaign has exceeded its initial goal of £300,000 to build one safe home and is now channeling efforts towards building a second refuge.
Amanda Cupples, Airbnb’s general manager for Northern Europe, described this pilot scheme as a significant stride in the company’s commitment to combating domestic abuse on a global scale. By extending vital assistance to survivors, Airbnb aims to support these individuals in rebuilding their lives.
