First case of new mpox variant discovered in Germany

Germany has confirmed its first case of the new mpox variant, a potentially deadly virus. The World Health Organisation (WHO) declared mpox a global public health emergency in response to an outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo that has caused over 450 deaths since 2021.

The WHO raised concerns over the rapid spread of a new strain named clade 1b, primarily transmitted through sexual networks. Prior to this declaration, over 100 cases had been reported in neighbouring countries like Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, and Uganda. The virus then spread beyond Africa, with cases detected in Sweden, Thailand, India, and now Germany.

The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) in Germany stated that the first case of the new mpox variant was detected on 18 October in someone who had acquired the infection abroad. Despite the discovery, RKI believes the risk to the general population in Germany is currently low. Since May 2022, Germany has identified around 3,800 cases of the clade 2b mpox variant, with most cases reported in 2022. Fortunately, most cases do not result in serious illness, and there have been no fatal cases in Germany.

Mpox is known to spread through sexual contact, with symptoms appearing between six and 13 days after infection. Symptoms include fever, headache, muscle pain, and a distinct rash that can spread rapidly throughout the body. Although most people with mild to moderate symptoms recover within two to four weeks, there have been over 220 deaths among more than 100,000 confirmed cases reported in 120 countries worldwide.

In the UK, 286 mpox cases were reported in 2023 and the first seven months of 2024, following 3,732 confirmed and probable cases in 2022. As of now, the UK has not identified any cases of the clade 1b strain. The situation is continually monitored by health authorities to ensure a swift response if needed.
