France has defended its decision to impose restrictions on Israeli companies supplying weapons to the wars in the Middle East. The French government clarified that it is not implementing a boycott but rather a measure to ensure balance and promote peace in the region.
The upcoming naval defense exhibition, Euronaval, set to take place outside Paris from November 4 to 7, faced controversy after organizers announced that Israeli companies could participate but with conditions. The companies must ensure that their products are not used in military operations in Gaza and Lebanon to be allowed to exhibit at the trade fair.
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot addressed parliament to explain the reasoning behind the restrictions. He emphasised that the policy does not signify a boycott against Israeli firms but is a way for France to maintain coherence in its stance on the conflicts in Gaza and Lebanon.
Barrot reiterated France’s support for Israel’s right to self-defence but highlighted the importance of not promoting weapons that contribute to civilian harm in the ongoing wars. He mentioned that companies whose equipment is not involved in offensive actions in Gaza and Lebanon can still participate in the exhibition.
In response to the restrictions, Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz criticised the decision, calling it “unacceptable” and “anti-democratic.” Katz urged French President Emmanuel Macron to overturn the limitations, stating that Western nations should stand with Israel.
Despite the backlash, Barrot confirmed that France would continue to export components for Israel’s “Iron Dome” air-defense system. He stressed the need for a balanced approach that does not condone weapons causing harm to civilian populations.
