Haiti’s Justice Ministry has issued a warning regarding threats made against Prime Minister Garry Conille and his Cabinet members. The Justice Ministry, in a statement released on Tuesday, revealed that they had received consistent and persistent information suggesting that the Prime Minister and other Cabinet officials were at risk of being targeted. The ministry emphasized the need for police and judicial authorities to take immediate and appropriate actions to ensure the safety and security of the officials.
Amidst this security alert, concerns have been raised as gang violence in certain neighborhoods of Haiti’s capital has been on the rise. The violence, attributed to a gang coalition known as “Viv Ansanm,” has resulted in attacks that have left over 4,000 individuals homeless in areas such as Solino and Tabarre 27. The recent escalation in violence follows previous large-scale attacks on government infrastructure earlier this year, which ultimately led to the resignation of former Prime Minister Ariel Henry.
This latest warning by the Justice Ministry comes in the wake of the assassination of former President Jovenel Moïse at his private residence in July 2021. With the security situation in Haiti remaining volatile, the safety of top government officials continues to be a matter of great concern.
