Kemi Badenoch hits out at Boris Johnson’s Partygate fines

Kemi Badenoch criticises Boris Johnson’s Partygate fines

Conservative leadership contender Kemi Badenoch has spoken out against Boris Johnson’s Partygate fines. The former prime minister faced scrutiny for misleading parliament about late-night parties taking place in Downing Street while the rest of the country was under Covid restrictions. Johnson was fined by the Metropolitan Police for attending a birthday event at No 10 during a time when such gatherings were prohibited.

In an interview on the BBC’s Political Thinking podcast, Badenoch expressed her disdain for the fines imposed during the Covid era. She stated, “The biggest thing I hated was the fixed penalty notices. That we were creating new criminal behaviour on what was everyday activity granted in exceptional circumstances. If we didn’t, you know, if Boris did not bring in those fixed penalty notices, he would not have had the Partygate scandal, certainly not to the extent that it was because he then got caught in a trap that he had set for himself.”

Last week, Badenoch faced backlash for supporting contentious claims related to mental health in a pamphlet she launched. The document suggested an inexplicable increase in mental health problem claims in Britain and made assertions about economic advantages for people with autism, which were strongly criticised by mental health experts.

The Mental Health Foundation denounced the claims as “wrong”, while NHS mental health director Claire Murdoch labelled the pamphlet’s content on mental health as “disgraceful”. Additionally, Badenoch was accused of perpetuating stigma against autism by associating the condition with supposed economic benefits.

In light of these controversies, Kemi Badenoch remains a prominent figure in the Conservative leadership race, as she continues to voice her opinions on key issues affecting the UK.
