Baywatch actor Michael Newman has passed away at the age of 68 after battling Parkinson’s disease, as reported by The Independent. Newman, best known for his role as Mike “Newmie” Newman on the original Baywatch series, was confirmed to have died from heart complications by his close friend and director Matt Felker.
Diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 2006, Newman faced the gradual decline in motor and non-motor abilities associated with the nervous system disorder. Felker shared a touching moment from Newman’s final days, recounting how the actor, surrounded by loved ones, humorously greeted him saying, “You’re just in time.”
Born in California in 1957, Newman gained fame for portraying the lifeguard character Newmie in the iconic Baywatch series that ran from 1989 to 2001. Notably, he was the only cast member who was a real-life trained lifeguard, bringing authenticity to his performance. Even while starring in 150 episodes of Baywatch, Newman also served as a full-time firefighter, successfully juggling both roles until his retirement after 25 years.
In addition to his contributions to Baywatch, Newman appeared in a few episodes of the spinoff Baywatch Nights. His legacy was further cemented by featuring in Felker’s Baywatch docuseries, where he had the opportunity to share his story alongside fellow cast members. Expressing his gratitude for the chance to tell their real-life experiences, Newman highlighted the significance of the documentary in reflecting their true selves.
Throughout his battle with Parkinson’s, Newman remained active in raising awareness and funds for research with the Michael J Fox Foundation, emphasising the profound impact the disease had on his life. He leaves behind his wife of 36 years, Sarah, his adult children Chris and Emily, and his one-year-old granddaughter, Charlie.
