Lockerbie Ice Rink in Dumfriesshire has recently undergone significant repairs, with over £20,000 worth of renovations completed to enhance safety and accessibility for all visitors. The refurbishments, which included the replacement of doors, windows, and rubber flooring, were crucial to address security and safety concerns, especially for curling activities at the rink. One of the main improvements is the installation of sensor-controlled doors at the new main entrance, greatly benefiting wheelchair users accessing the facility.
Funding for these repairs was made possible through a grant of £19,400 from the Annandale and Nithsdale Community Benefit Company, facilitated by Foundation Scotland. Duncan Gracie, Chairperson of Lockerbie Ice Rink, expressed gratitude towards ANCBC for their support, highlighting the improved infrastructure and appearance of the facility without burdening customers with additional costs. The funding was instrumental in ensuring the continued operation of the rink, which provides a space for people of all ages and abilities to enjoy various activities together.
Moreover, Alan Somerville, a senior development officer of Cunninghame Housing Association, presented a £1,000 cheque to Lockerbie Ice Rink Curling School to subsidize curling sessions for young participants in the Mini Rockers section. This initiative aims to provide start-up training for children aged six to nine years old, fostering their interest in the sport. The contribution from CHA was appreciated by Rae Graham, Vice Chairperson of Lockerbie Ice Rink, who emphasized the importance of such support in maintaining the facility.
Janet Strang, Chairperson of CHA, expressed delight in backing Lockerbie Ice Rink, emphasising the positive impact of introducing young people to a new sport and facilitating their social development. The rink, a valuable community asset since 1967, now offers inclusive quiet time skating sessions for vulnerable individuals and young children during weekends.
