A nursing home in Paisley has been highlighted for areas of improvement following an inspection by the Care Inspectorate. Hillside View nursing home, which caters to individuals with dementia and alcohol-related brain damage, received feedback from three inspectors who conducted an unannounced visit over four days last month.
On a rating scale from one to six, with one being unsatisfactory and six being excellent, Hillside View was rated as four, indicating a ‘good’ performance in terms of leadership, staff team, and setting. However, the facility received a three, signifying ‘adequate’ performance, for its support of residents’ wellbeing and care planning.
The inspectors acknowledged that the nursing home effectively managed residents’ health, medication, and nutritional needs, with good access to healthcare services. They also noted that the setting was conducive to small-group living, providing access to quiet and private spaces. Despite these positive aspects, the report highlighted the need for environmental upgrades to ensure facilities were well-maintained.
In their interactions with residents, family members, staff, and management, the inspectors found that meaningful activities for residents were lacking, leading to periods of boredom amongst residents. The report emphasised the importance of enhancing activities to support residents’ wellbeing and mental engagement.
While the inspectors praised the staff team and manager for their collaborative approach and dedication to meeting residents’ needs, they also pointed out the need for stronger leadership and a more varied skills mix to enhance care provision.
Hillside View is registered to accommodate up to 57 adults and is divided into two communities catering to different age groups and conditions. One community supports individuals aged 65 and over with dementia, while the other assists those over 45 with alcohol-related brain damage. The facility also offers a short-stay service.
Overall, the Care Inspectorate report commended the well-designed environment at Hillside View, which was tailored to the residents’ needs and provided a comfortable and homely atmosphere. Despite this, some areas were identified as requiring refurbishment, and rooms needing upgrading. Residents appreciated ongoing refurbishments, with personalised and comfortable rooms contributing to their satisfaction.
