Japanese Rail Company Introduces Stab-Proof Umbrellas to Enhance Passenger Safety
In a bid to protect passengers from potential knife attacks, a Japanese rail company is set to deploy hundreds of blade-resistant umbrellas on trains in the Kansai region. The initiative by West Japan Railway Co (JR West) will see approximately 1,200 stab-proof umbrellas installed on 600 trains, following a string of violent incidents on trains, including a disturbing attack that injured three passengers in July 2023.
The stab-proof umbrellas are specially designed to be around 20cm longer than standard umbrellas, featuring reinforced canopies and thicker handles for improved defence capabilities. This increased length allows the umbrella to be used as a shield, creating a safe distance between the holder and a potential assailant. It is hoped that this added protection will provide valuable time for other passengers to escape to safety in the event of an attack.
The introduction of these innovative umbrellas comes in the wake of a previous incident in which a 37-year-old man carrying three knives went on a stabbing spree on a train in Osaka. The victims, including a train conductor and two passengers, sustained injuries but thankfully were not critically harmed. The need for enhanced safety measures to protect passengers on public transport has become more pressing, leading to initiatives like the deployment of stab-proof umbrellas on trains.
JR West President, Kazuaki Hasegawa, emphasised the importance of these new umbrellas by highlighting their compact, lightweight nature, which makes them easier to store and use compared to traditional defence tools like the sasumata, a long forked polearm. The company aims for its crew to be well-prepared to handle emergencies and ensure the safe evacuation of passengers in any crisis situation.
Violent crimes are uncommon in Japan, but recent concerns surrounding random knife attacks have spurred train operators to bolster security measures. From installing additional cameras to conducting regular safety drills, efforts are being made to fortify passenger safety on trains. With preparations underway for the Osaka-Kansai Expo next year, JR West is committed to further improving the safety of its passengers through proactive security initiatives.
