A new recreational drug known as ‘pink cocaine’ has been making headlines, causing confusion as it does not typically contain cocaine. The pink powder, which is actually a mix of various drugs dyed pink, has been turning up in drug seizures, leading law enforcement to issue warnings. Referred to as “tusi” as well, these nicknames are more about the marketing of the substance than its actual content. Experts have revealed that pink cocaine often contains ketamine rather than cocaine, with occasional mixes including methamphetamine, MDMA, bath salts, caffeine and opioids. The pink colour is achieved through the use of food colouring or dye.
Joseph Palamar, a researcher studying drug trends at NYU Langone Health in New York, explained that while some batches may include cocaine, pink cocaine is predominantly a ketamine concoction. The term “tusi” may have been derived from 2C-B, a recreational drug popular in rave culture during the 1990s, known for its euphoric effects. However, recent drug analyses have shown that tusi does not typically contain 2C-B, leading to confusion among young people who are unaware of the history behind the name. The lack of clarity on the substance’s composition poses risks to users, as they may experience undesired effects or unknowingly consume a larger amount than intended.
The danger associated with pink cocaine lies in the uncertainty of its ingredients, potentially leading to harmful outcomes. Ketamine, which is a key component of pink cocaine, is a potent anesthetic used in surgery but has also been used recreationally and for treating depression, anxiety, and pain. The drug can induce hallucinations, impacting breathing and heart function. Palamar noted that large doses of ketamine can create disorienting and unpleasant experiences, especially when combined with alcohol. Recent reports have highlighted instances of pink cocaine being seized by authorities, including off the coasts of Mexico and Central and South America.
In conclusion, the emergence of ‘pink cocaine’ as a recreational drug raises concerns due to its ambiguous composition and associated risks. The misleading names and varied drug combinations pose a threat to users’ health and safety, highlighting the importance of awareness and caution in substance use.
