A Russian man has been charged with the murder of two Ukrainian soldiers in Germany earlier this year. Prosecutors revealed that the 57-year-old suspect, whose name hasn’t been disclosed in accordance with German privacy laws, was arrested shortly after the fatal stabbing occurred in the small Bavarian town of Murnau on April 27.
According to prosecutors in Munich, the suspect, along with the two victims who were recovering from operations in Germany, got into an argument about the situation in Ukraine while drinking together. The altercation reportedly led to the suspect feeling that his national pride was offended. Subsequently, he decided to fatally stab the two wounded Ukrainian soldiers in a surprise attack, fetching a knife from his nearby apartment. One of the soldiers died immediately, while the other succumbed to his injuries later on.
The prosecutors stated that the suspect, described as a supporter of extreme Russian nationalism, fully endorses the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine. The two Ukrainian soldiers had been brought to Germany for medical treatment after being injured in the war. Following surgeries at a hospital in Murnau, they were recuperating in the town but were physically impaired due to their operations.
As Germany stands as one of Ukraine’s strongest allies in the conflict with Russia since the invasion commenced in 2022, the case will be deliberated by a state court in Munich to determine if and when it will proceed to trial.
