Plans have been given the green light to build a new staff facility at the National Air Traffic Services (NATS) base in Prestwick. The proposed facility will include amenities such as a gym, sleeping areas, a medical suite, and a goods-in area. Wilson & Gunn Architects were the agents in the proposal, with NATS being the applicant, situated at Fresson Avenue. As the largest air traffic control provider in the UK, NATS offers services at 15 airports and manages all UK upper airspace from their ATC Centres in Prestwick and Swanwick.
The upcoming construction will see a new staff support building being erected at their existing ATC Centre on Fresson Avenue, leading to the demolition of Atlantic House. The change is deemed necessary due to shifts brought by the Covid-19 pandemic, resulting in underutilization of Atlantic House. The aging structure, coupled with inefficient layout and maintenance costs, has prompted NATS to opt for a new, modern facility.
The planned staff support facility will be located northeast of the Prestwick Centre and span 682 sqm across three floors. The ground floor will consist of an entrance foyer, changing rooms, toilets, and storage space. The first floor will house a lobby, medical centre, and gym, while the second floor will feature additional amenities like a tea preparation area, bedrooms, and plant rooms. Additionally, solar panels will be installed on the roof for sustainable energy use.
