Atletico Madrid’s Estadio Metropolitano has surprise rival to host Champions League final

A surprise rival has emerged in the bidding to host the Champions League final in 2027, with Atletico Madrid’s Estadio Metropolitano facing competition from the Baku Olympic Stadium in Azerbaijan. The Azerbaijani capital has put forward a bid after the final was stripped from Milan’s San Siro.

The declarations of interest for the men’s showpiece have come from the Baku Olympic Stadium and the Estadio Metropolitano, which hosted the final in 2019. The final proposals are expected to be delivered by 19th March 2025. If Baku were to host the final, it would mark the first Champions League final in the former Soviet Union since Real Madrid’s triumph in Kyiv in 2018. The capacity of the Baku Olympic Stadium is 69,870, and it previously hosted the 2019 Europa League final.

In addition to the men’s final bids, there are four potential venues for the 2027 women’s final. The Principality Stadium in Cardiff, Camp Nou in Barcelona, National Stadium in Warsaw, and St Jakob Park in Basel are all vying for the opportunity to host the women’s final.

While the men’s Champions League final for 2025 and 2026 is set to be held in Munich and Budapest respectively, the hosting rights for the 2027 final were initially awarded to San Siro. However, due to renovation work in Milan, Uefa decided to reopen the bidding process. Cardiff, Barcelona, Warsaw, and Basel are the potential venues for the women’s final, with Atletico Madrid and Baku being the current contenders for the men’s final.

Madrid has a rich history of hosting Champions League finals, with the Estadio Metropolitano and Real’s Bernabeu Stadium having hosted several finals in the past. The final decision on the host cities for both the men’s and women’s 2027 Champions League finals is eagerly awaited.

In summary, the upcoming Champions League finals in 2027 have sparked significant interest with surprise contenders for the hosting rights. The bidding process has been reopened, with Atletico Madrid’s Estadio Metropolitano facing competition from the Baku Olympic Stadium in Azerbaijan. As the proposals are set to be delivered in 2025, football fans eagerly await the announcement of the final host cities for both the men’s and women’s Champions League finals.
