Cocaine-related deaths have surged by 30% as drug-related fatalities in the United Kingdom have reached unprecedented levels, according to recent data. Official figures have shown that in 2023, a total of 5,448 individuals lost their lives due to drug poisoning in England and Wales, marking the highest number recorded since data collection began in 1993 and an 11% increase from the previous year.

Since monitoring these drugs in June last year, the agency has already linked at least 284 deaths to nitazenes, with 150,000 nitazene tablets seized in what is considered the country’s largest synthetic opioid bust in October the previous year.
