The availability of superfast broadband in Rutherglen and Cambuslang has seen a significant increase, as per figures released by the Scottish Parliament’s information centre. Clare Haughey MSP has welcomed these new statistics, showing a steep rise in superfast broadband access in the area. While telecoms and broadband fall under the jurisdiction of the UK Government, the Scottish Government has invested £1 billion to connect premises to fibre-based broadband across Scotland.
Initially, many residents, particularly those living in new-build estates, had raised concerns about the lack of superfast broadband in the region. However, as of September, nearly 99% of properties in South Lanarkshire now have access to superfast broadband, a considerable improvement from 70% in 2014. The broader picture across Scotland reveals that 95% of households now have access to superfast broadband, marking a 45% increase over the past decade.
Clare Haughey MSP acknowledged the importance of good digital connectivity for work, business, and daily life. The Scottish Government’s commitment to investing in infrastructure has resulted in tangible benefits for residents in Rutherglen and Cambuslang. Going forward, starting from 2025, all new builds in Scotland will be required to have access to superfast broadband, aligning with a commitment outlined in the SNP Government’s Programme for Government.
