Colorado Congresswoman Lauren Boebert has criticised the Biden-Harris administration for their efforts to protect what she described as an “ugly” animal in her home state. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) recently announced plans to conserve public lands in Colorado in order to protect the Gunnison sage-grouse, a bird listed as “threatened” under the Endangered Species Act.
Boebert, a Republican Representative, took issue with these conservation plans and claimed that President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, and former President Barack Obama have been pushing to protect the Gunnison sage-grouse’s “ugly, non-endangered cousin,” the Greater Sage-Grouse. She accused them of prioritising the interests of environmental activists over the well-being of Coloradans by attempting to restrict critical land uses such as oil and gas exploration.
In a statement to Newsweek, Boebert stated, “Instead of putting Coloradans first, they’re continuing to bend the knee to Green New Deal worshippers who want to destroy Colorado’s oil & gas industry and the tens of thousands of good-paying jobs that support families across the state.” She vowed to oppose this conservation effort as she believes it will negatively impact the state’s economy.
The Congresswoman also raised concerns that the conservation plan could hinder the gas and oil industry in the region. BLM Colorado State Director, Doug Vilsack, reassured that the bureau is committed to wildlife conservation in Colorado while balancing oil and gas management with the protection of wildlife habitats.
