Lockerbie & District Rotary Club Members Tour Moffat Mountain Rescue Base
Members of the Lockerbie and District Rotary Club recently had an exciting change of scenery as they visited the Moffat Mountain Rescue Team base on Selkirk Road. The visit provided a unique opportunity for the club members to learn more about the life-saving work carried out by the team in the region.
Upon arrival, the club members were warmly welcomed by James Coles, the team leader of Moffat Mountain Rescue. James Coles shared a comprehensive overview of the history of the rescue team, highlighting their evolution and current operations. The Moffat Mountain Rescue Team is part of the Scottish Mountain Rescue network, which consists of 22 civilian teams across Scotland, as well as three police Mountain Rescue Teams and one RAF Mountain Rescue Team. Additionally, other resources such as SARDA and Scottish Cave Rescue can be called upon for assistance, and the team is equipped with drone rescue capabilities.
With 27 dedicated members located throughout the district, the MMRT is well-prepared to respond to emergencies in various terrains. The team’s commitment to staying updated on the latest rescue techniques was evident, as members undergo rigorous training exercises with other teams, covering areas such as avalanche response, swift water rescues, and caving operations. Each member is trained in first aid, casualty care, and safe practices when working alongside helicopters.
During the visit, the club members had the opportunity to explore the equipment used by the rescue team, ranging from ropes and ice axes to medical packs equipped with defibrillators. The emphasis on preparedness and safety was evident in every aspect of the team’s operations. To show their appreciation for the valuable insights gained during the visit, the Lockerbie and District Rotary Club presented a thermal imaging camera as a gift to team leader James Coles.
The evening concluded with a vote of thanks from Francis Wilbur, expressing gratitude to the MMRT for their enlightening presentation. A supper at the Annandale Arms Hotel provided a fitting end to a memorable and educational visit.
