These accounts, operated by a Florida college student named Jack Sweeney, were initially removed from Threads and Instagram, with plans to delete them from Facebook as well. Sweeney’s tracking extended to other notable individuals like Governor Ron DeSantis, Kim Kardashian, Kylie Jenner, Jeff Bezos, and Bill Gates.
Despite the fact that non-military flight paths collected by the FAA are considered public information, Meta decided to crack down on these accounts citing concerns about the potential risk of physical harm to individuals. Andy Stone, a Meta spokesperson, referenced the company’s Oversight Board recommendation to remove any references to users’ addresses to justify the ban. However, the Oversight Board’s suggestion was regarding addresses and not flight paths.
Following the ban, Elon Musk, known for his stance as a “free speech absolutist,” promptly banned Sweeney’s account on his platform, X. Musk alleged that the account violated doxxing rules and even threatened legal action against Sweeney. Similarly, singer Taylor Swift also took legal action when she discovered that her jet was being tracked by Sweeney.
In response, Sweeney created new accounts to continue monitoring the flight patterns of the wealthy and influential individuals but now delays sharing the information by a day to prevent misuse.
