British killer nurse Lucy Letby’s appeal bid for a conviction of attempted baby murder has been rejected by an appeals court in London. Letby, 34, is currently serving multiple life sentences with no chance of release after being found guilty of murdering seven babies and attempting to murder seven others while she worked as a neonatal nurse at the Countess of Chester Hospital in northwestern England between June 2015 and June 2016.
Letby’s attempt to challenge her conviction for the attempted murder of a baby girl, identified in court as Child K in February 2016, was dismissed by the court. Her lawyer argued that her retrial in July on this charge should not have proceeded due to what was deemed as “overwhelming and irremediable prejudice” from media coverage of her initial trial in 2023.
During the retrial, which took place because jurors at Manchester Crown Court were unable to reach a verdict on the charge involving Child K, Letby maintained her innocence, stating that she never caused harm to any child. Watching the proceedings via a prison video link, Letby displayed no emotion as the judges denied her petition to appeal. This decision follows a similar ruling in May when she attempted to appeal her previous convictions.
The rejection of Letby’s appeal comes amidst an ongoing inquiry into the hospital’s failures to identify the reasons behind the deaths of babies in the neonatal unit and to take action against Letby sooner.
