The Glasgow-based Green Door Theatre company will be bringing this musical adaptation to life over the Halloween weekend.
Adapted from the beloved film starring Drew Barrymore and Adam Sandler, Kelly Johnston will play Julia, while her real-life best friend, Andi Denny, will take on the role of Robbie Hart. The musical is known for its uplifting romantic comedy storyline and iconic 1980s-inspired musical numbers, including favourites like “Somebody Kill Me Please” and “I Wanna Grow Old With You” from the original movie.
Both Kelly and Andi, who have a background in professional performance and theatre, have collaborated on numerous shows and concerts since meeting in 2010. Despite usually gravitating towards comedy roles, Kelly is embracing the opportunity to embody the sweet and endearing character of Julia. Expressing her excitement, Kelly stated, “The Wedding Singer is one of my favourite movies, and I love the musical just as much. It has been so much fun playing Julia, and I am cherishing this bucket list moment.”
In the musical, Andi will portray the character of Robbie, a wedding band lead singer and hopeless romantic who experiences heartbreak when left by his fiancée, Linda, played by Ruth Tower. The Green Door Theatre production promises high-energy performances from a talented cast, bringing forth a host of memorable and hilarious characters that audiences won’t want to miss.
The Green Door Theatre company’s staging of “The Wedding Singer” will take place at Glasgow’s Platform Theatre, located at 1000 Westerhouse Rd, Easterhouse, Glasgow G34 9JW, from October 31 to November 2.
