Scottish Government delays ban on disposable vapes in line with UK Government regulations
The Scottish Government has decided to postpone the ban on disposable vapes to align with the regulations set by the UK Government. Originally, the ban was scheduled to take effect on April 1, 2025, as passed by the Scottish Parliament. However, new legislation at Westminster has set the ban for June 1, 2025. Scottish Health Secretary Neil Gray announced the adjustment, stating that the Scottish Government aims to provide clarity and consistency across the four nations regarding the sale and supply of single-use vapes. The decision to delay the ban comes amidst concerns over the increasing use of vapes among young people, with data showing that a quarter of 11 to 15 year olds have tried vaping. While the long-term health effects of vaping are still being studied, experts have shed light on the immediate impact of vaping on the body.
Dr. Kaywaan Khan, a Private GP and Advanced Aesthetics Practitioner, explained that vaping can lead to a quick absorption of nicotine into the body, resulting in an immediate spike in heart rate and blood pressure. This nicotine rush triggers the release of dopamine, creating a sense of pleasure for the user. Vaping can also cause irritation to the throat and lungs, leading to symptoms like coughing and dry mouth. Additionally, new vapers may experience shortness of breath initially. GP Thuva Amuthan emphasised that while e-cigarettes contain fewer harmful chemicals than traditional cigarettes, the aerosol produced may still contain potentially harmful substances such as ultrafine particles and heavy metals. Comparatively, the immediate effects of smoking a traditional cigarette involve the rapid delivery of nicotine to the brain, along with the absorption of carbon monoxide that hinders oxygen transport in the blood.
After vaping for 10-30 minutes, users may feel jitteriness or anxiety, although their heart rate and blood pressure are likely to stabilise during this period. However, the inhalation of aerosolised particles from vapes can still cause lung irritation and inflammation. For cigarette smokers, continued exposure to carbon monoxide can strain the cardiovascular system, leading to the development of atherosclerosis and increasing the risk of heart attacks and strokes. At the 30-minute mark, vaping may lead to short-term alterations in cardiovascular and lung function, while the inflammatory response to aerosolised particles could contribute to respiratory symptoms. Meanwhile, chronic exposure to tobacco smoke from cigarettes can lead to lung damage and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, as well as cardiovascular issues.
By the one-hour mark, vapers may experience irritability and cravings for another vape session due to the onset of withdrawal symptoms. Nicotine’s residual effects can persist, affecting heart rate and blood pressure. For cigarette smokers, the body continues to deal with the aftermath of harmful chemicals, with nicotine levels gradually declining. However, the vasoconstrictive effects of nicotine can sustain elevated blood pressure, while carbon monoxide levels diminish, allowing the blood to carry oxygen more efficiently. The cumulative exposure to tobacco smoke over time increases the risk of various diseases, including lung cancer, cardiovascular disease, and respiratory conditions. Long-term vaping has been associated with potential health risks, such as chronic lung damage, reduced lung function, and skin problems similar to those caused by smoking traditional cigarettes.
